SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTING IS NOT FOR WIMPS! AM I RIGHT? (June 26, 2018)
The summers are the hardest. My 19 yr old hates the heat. When I say hates, I mean HATES. He is miserable and is determined to take every one down with him. He is not comfortable sitting in his chair, he is not comfortable in bed. He gets so stiff and breaks out into a cold sweat and cramps, causing himself more discomfort. This is a vicious cycle. I know it's a combination of no school and hot weather, he is hot and bored. No matter what I do to cool him down, his spasticity causes him to overheat in record time. These are the times I feel so helpless. These are the times when self-pity wants to make its annoying behind at home in my heart once again, a time when I have to battle a complaining, griping attitude. No matter how well it is going, no matter how many beautiful things are going on around us, it seems (some days) that my son's cerebral palsy will always be in charge. Yes it can change the circumstances, it can change our routine and maybe our plans; however the biggest, most difficult challenge is "will I allow it to change my attitude?" Will I allow these difficulties to dictate my mood or my faith? Will I become grumpy and kick every one in sight? Or will I fight to keep my peace and enjoy life despite the less-than-perfect circumstances? This is the question!
